D.E. Gemmill is Impacting The Vision Zero Movement
D.E. Gemmill is helping our local cities in the Vision Zero Movement to help eliminate traffic related deaths and serious injuries. Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all. First implemented in Sweden in the 1990’s, Vision Zero has a proven success rate across Europe- and is now gaining momentum in major American cities.
Every year, more than 40,000 people (the population of a small city) or roughly 100 people per day are needlessly killed on American streets and millions more are injured in traffic accidents. These so-called traffic “accidents” can be easily prevented with an approach that prioritizes traffic safety as a public health issue. Too often people oversee these severe injuries and tragic deaths as inevitable side effects of every day life, but in reality, cities and local municipalities have the power in possibly preventing these traffic collisions by creating safer systems for travel.
Vision Zero is a policy that takes an ethics- based approach to achieving safety for all modes of transportation, with the understanding that transportation systems affect human life and no traffic-related loss of life is acceptable. Initiatives put forth fundamentality to improve traffic safety is based on data, engineering, enforcement and education- ultimately to get to zero traffic deaths and serious injuries. Systematic changes, road systems and related polices are needed to make meaningful progress and effective communities will recognize and commit to the core Vision Zero strategies and principles. Â
D.E. Gemmill has been working with contractors on the City of Harrisburg Vision Zero project on 6th street near the Broad Street Market. We completed 315 lineal feet of white thermoplastic pavement markings, 6 “bicycle with rider” thermoplastic legends, 6 arrow thermoplastic legends, as well as a green bike lane pavement markings.
This specialized bike lane treatment called CycleGrip MMAX conveniently combines state of the art Methyl Methacrylate resins with hard wearing aggregate and premium pigments to deliver an extremely durable, highly visible and color stable priority lane delineation treatment that meets the non-slip requirements needed for cyclists. Bike lane pavement markings are used to delineate bike lanes to improve road safety by enhancing bike lane presence in applications such as, but not limited to corridor treatment along the length of a bike lane or cycle track especially at areas where bicycle and vehicular conflict are expected and enhanced safety is needed.
In addition to the thermoplastic pavement markings and green bike lanes our sign crew installed 34 traffic signs and 14 flexible delineators to improve traffic signage and awareness of the new traffic pattern and bike lane. We have also recently completed work in Lancaster City to help aid their Vision Zero efforts.
