D.E. Gemmill Founder and Owner Featured in AsphaltPro
D.E. Gemmill and its founder, David Gemmill, were recently featured in an article in AsphaltPro, a magazine dedicated to serving the asphalt industry with news and stories about asphalt plants and paving operations.
The November 2026 issue featured D.E. Gemmill’s use of the Tyker Robot Plotter and took a closer look at how the company is combining LiDAR mapping and automation on the roadway.
The article covered D.E. Gemmill’s recent announcement about the groundbreaking robotic plotter technology they now use for transverse-joint layout projects. Diving into D.E. Gemmill’s recent work with PennDOT and the JVI Group on US15 in Adams County, Pennsylvania, the article showed how D.E. Gemmill used the technology to lay out transverse-joint locations over approximately 4.1 miles across two southbound lanes.

A Closer Look at the Process
As AsphaltPro explains, with the robotic technology, transverse-joint layout can now be completed in 5 simple steps.
- First, a milling subcontractor removes existing pavement to expose the concrete roadway
- Then, D.E. Gemmill uses the Auto Layout truck with LiDAR technology to scan the exposed concrete. This captures the locations of the joints, and this information is processed into position data that is then loaded into the robotic plotter
- Next, the prime contractor paves the roadway
- Now D.E. Gemmill uses the robotic plotter with its recorded positioning data to travel the new pavement and mark the transverse joint locations
- Finally, the subcontractor saw cuts and seals the joints at the marked location.
The final result means less time for crew members on busy roads and less demanding physical labor when they’re out there.
D.E. Gemmill Leads the Future
For the team at D.E. Gemmill, adopting and using new technology is part of their goal to constantly improve their work. Investing in the future helps them lead the way when it comes to safety, efficiency, and service.
The team at D.E. Gemmill is excited to share their work with AsphaltPro readers and give fellow contractors insight into how the technology can work in the field.
