American with Disabilities Act (ADA)

Revised Changes Effective March 15, 2012

As of March 15, 2012, American with Disabilities Act (ADA) changes must meet the minimum Federal revised requirements.  However, local, county and state governments may pass their own regulations as long as they meet the minimum Federal requirements.

Some of the new Federal changes include:

  1. Accessible Route—an accessible route is needed between the accessible parking stalls and the accessible building or facility entrance.  This means a crosswalk between the stalls and the accessible ramp or entrance.  This would be required at each entrance from each set of accessible parking areas.

  1. Parking Stalls—an update for the number of required accessible parking stalls for the total number of stalls provided at a building or facility.  This has very few changes since the last updates from the ADA.

  1. Number of Van Accessible Parking Stalls—this has changed, it used to be one in every eight, and now it is one in every six parking stalls must be van accessible.

  1. Accessible Signage for Parking Stalls—indicates all accessible parking stalls shall have signage provided unless it meets exceptions.  However, local codes will typically supersede the Federal code if it is more stringent.  Most local and state governing agencies require signage for all accessible parking stalls, especially, where fines may be given to violators.

  1. Parking Stall Information—discusses the size of the accessible parking stalls, how they can be positioned, and how they are measured.  This also discusses the height of the handicap signs.
